The Gaumukh Tapovan trek is one of the most rewarding journeys in the Indian Himalayas. Beginning from the sacred town of Gangotri, the trail follows the Bhagirathi River towards Gaumukh, the source of the Ganga, before entering a landscape dominated by glaciers, alpine meadows, and towering Himalayan peaks.

Beyond Gaumukh, the route climbs to Tapovan, a vast high-altitude meadow situated beneath the iconic Shivling Peak. Few campsites in the Himalayas offer such dramatic surroundings, with uninterrupted views of Shivling, Meru, and the Bhagirathi massif.

The journey continues across glacial terrain towards Nandanvan, a remote campsite positioned directly opposite some of the highest peaks in the Garhwal Himalayas. Arrive at Gangotri, one of the most sacred pilgrimage towns in the Himalayas and the starting point of the trek. Surrounded by deodar forests and the Bhagirathi River, Gangotri offers the perfect setting to acclimatize, complete final preparations, and begin the journey into the heart of the Gangotri region.

The trail follows the Bhagirathi River through Chirbasa and rugged mountain terrain before reaching Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the source of the sacred Ganga. After spending time at Gaumukh, continue towards Bhojbasa, a broad glacial valley surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks.

Today’s route leaves the main trail behind and ascends across glacial terrain towards Tapovan. The climb is challenging but rewarding, gradually revealing breathtaking views of Shivling, Meru, and the Bhagirathi peaks. Camp in the vast alpine meadows of Tapovan, one of the most spectacular high-altitude campsites in the Himalayas.

Trek Distance: Approx. 8 km | Duration: 6–7 Hours | Altitude: 14,900 ft | Stay: Campsite

Cross rugged moraine and glacier sections as you make your way from Tapovan to Nandanvan. Located directly opposite the Bhagirathi massif, Nandanvan offers dramatic mountain scenery and a unique perspective of the surrounding peaks, making it one of the highlights of the trek.

Trek Distance: Approx. 12 km | Duration: 7–8 Hours | Highest Altitude: 15,600 ft | Stay: Campsite

A challenging excursion leads to Vasuki Tal, a pristine high-altitude lake nestled amidst rugged Himalayan terrain. Surrounded by glaciers and towering peaks, the lake remains one of the most beautiful and remote destinations in the Gangotri region. Return to Nandanvan for the night.

Retrace your route across moraine fields and glacial terrain as you descend towards Bhojbasa. With the major ascents behind you, the day offers time to appreciate the vast landscapes and changing perspectives of the Gangotri valley.

Descend through the Gangotri valley, passing familiar landmarks along the Bhagirathi River before arriving back in Gangotri. The evening can be spent relaxing, reflecting on the journey, and enjoying the atmosphere of this historic Himalayan town.

Driving Distance: Approx. 250 km | Duration: 9–10 Hours

Depart from Gangotri and follow the Bhagirathi valley downstream towards Rishikesh. The drive marks the end of an unforgettable journey through one of the most iconic high-altitude regions in the Indian Himalayas.
